System Status Information PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 17 April 2007
The SAS System Monitoring Server has been setup to provide an overall picture our system status. The system is also used to monitor critical central systems such as LDAP which is used for authentication. The information below details what each of the servers does so you can better understand our infrastructure as well as determine what problems might be caused by system failures as noted in the hobbit software.

NSS Cluster (nss.fas -> nss1.fas, nss2.fas)
 Network Service Systems (NSS) handle SMTP (backend mail send and receive), SPAM Filtering and DHCP (automatic configuration of network addresses on computers). These systems are arranged in a redundant active/active cluster so, if one server goes down, the other server automatically takes over and users should notice no change in service. At worst e-mail delivery may slow down. Also known as: smtp.fas, dhcp.fas.
 IMAP Cluster (imap.fas -> imap1.fas,imap2.fas)
 The IMAP cluster provides front-end mail services to all users who have accounts on SAS servers (these are the machines your e-mail software connects to). These machines are arranged in an Active/Passive cluster so, if the primary server goes down, the secondary server will take over automatically. At worst users may receive a disconnection method in their e-mail client but clicking on a folder or message will automatically reconnect them.
 SQL Cluster (sql.fas -> sql1.fas,sql2.fas)
