How do I re-activate MS Office or Windows for an off-campus machine?
Microsoft Office 2010/2013 and Windows 7 need to contact the Rutgers volume activation servers at least once every 6 months to maintain their activation. If your computer has not connected to the Rutgers network in the last 6 months, Windows or Office may lose their activation status. The steps below detail how to re-activate Office and Windows when off-campus.
1) Connect to Rutgers VPN
Run the Pulse Secure VPN client and connect to the Rutgers VPN with your NetID and password. If you do not have Pulse Secure, installation and configuration instructions can be found on this page:
2) Download Simple Activator
Download the “Simple Activator” application by going to http://mssg.rutgers.edu/volumeactivation/ and click on the “Download the Simple Activator” link.
3) Run Simple Activator
Run the SimpleActivator.exe file that was downloaded. Select either “Activate Windows” or “Activate Office”. If a button is greyed out then that product has already been activated or is not eligible for activation. When the activation has finished you should receive a message at the bottom of the Message Log that the activation completed successfully. You can now close the Simple Activator app and disconnect from the VPN.
