Accessing shared accounts in Thunderbird

Configuring Thunderbird to Access a Shared Account

In Rutgers Connect, shared folders are actually shared accounts.  In order to set the up in Thunderbird, you have to add a new account. These instructions will use the This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. account as an example but you should substitute that with the shared account you want to set up.

This can be done by clicking the menu highlighted in yellow below and choosing

Then choose options

Then choose account settings

Now choose Add Mail Account...

Enter the name you'd like people to see when you send mail from this shared account in the Your Name field.
Enter the e-mail address of the shared account in the Email Address field
Enter your NetID password in the Password field.
Click Continue

Thunderbird will try to configure itself automatically.  It won't be able to.  Click Manual config to stop it from trying.

Change the information in the yellow box.  Incoming and Outgoing servers are the same for everyone.  Make sure the settings match what is in the picture below.

The incoming username is a little more complicated.  You should first enter the address you use to login to Rutgers Connect.  In this case it's 'This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.'.  Then add a backslash '\' and then add the name of the shared account, in this case 'math-advising'.

You'll notice that the account itself is This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. but the account entered below is 'math-advising'.  That's because shared accounts have to have a unique name in Rutgers Connect so all shared accounts are prefixed with the area in which they reside, in this case math.  All accounts in math will have a math, a dash and then the account name before the @.  Therefore, in this case, math-advising.  Subsitite the value for the account that you are setting up.

The outgoing settings should not have the account information after it.  That should simply be your regular e-mail address, in this example: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Now click Re-test.  After the test, the Done button will work.  Click Done.

You're done.  You should now see the new account setup in the navigation bar of Thunderbird.  You'll need to repeat this entire procedure for every shared account you have to setup.
